Professor Alan J Crockett recently retired from the position of Director, Primary Care Respiratory Research Unit, Discipline of General Practice, School of Population Health, The University of Adelaide. Prior to this appointment he had a career in Respiratory Medicine spanning more than 38 years. Alan was the first graduate of the Masters of Public Health at the University of Adelaide and also holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Medicine. He also holds a Graduate Certificate of Health Economics (University of Aberdeen). He has also been involved in teaching health professionals at the undergraduate and post-graduate level in subjects including clinical respiratory physiology, critical appraisal, epidemiology, health economics and ethics. Alan held the position of Deputy Chair of the Australian Centre of Evidence Based Practice 2000 to 2007. He also was Chair of the Steering committee for the University of South Australia’s International Centre for Allied Health Evidence (iCAHE) until it became part of the Sansom Insitute. Alan was elected Fellow of the Australian Institute of Science Technology in 1976. More recently, he was awarded a Fellowship & Life Membership of the Australian and New Zealand Society for Respiratory Science and Emeritus Member status of the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand for his contribution to respiratory medicine. He was awarded a Public Service Medal for “outstanding contribution to community health” in the Order of Australia Awards for Australia Day 2003. Alan has published more than 103 professional peer-reviewed papers and has produced 9 detailed reports on projects based on EBM for the NH&MRC and Australian Lung Foundation. He has received more than $5.280 million in research funding. Alan has made more than 35-invited guest presentation at international conferences and more than 70 invited guest presentations at national scientific meetings. He has also made more than 50 other poster and lecture presentations to both national and international conferences.
